Seahawks & Silverkings Start With a Classic Battle - Nov. 08, 2009

Saturday, November 7th, 2009, Fundy Arena - The Southern Hockey League's Battle of Charlotte County commenced for the 2009-2010 season, as the St. Stephen Seahawks made their first of three visits to the Fundy Arena in Black's Harbour to play Meryl Stewart's Silverkings.
In an attempt to increase league parity, the SHL has incorporated a prohibition on hiring out-of-province imports, as well as limited each team to only eight "high end" players on their protected players list. Out of province players who were on a team's roster during the 2008-2009 season were grandfathered.
The game was very competitive, with the home team winning by a score of 7 - 4. The Silverkings out shot the Seahawks 40 - 38.
Four different Seahawks found the back of the net past one of the Silverking's newest acquisitions, former Philadelphia Phantom goaltender Martin Houle. Jeremy Turgeon, acquired from the AQ Thunder for a second round draft pick next Fall, had a goal and an assist, while Justin Roy scored his first of the season. Adam Bradley followed up his five point night on Friday against the AQ Molson Thunder with his third goal of the season. Ray Fitzpatrick scored his first of the season on the power play, set up by Turgeon. Shawn Mersereau had 3 assists on the night, leading all Seahawks in scoring.
The Silverkings scoring was well rounded, with Chris Boyce being the only player with multiple goals, two. Rob George had a four point night, with a goal and an assit, while newly acquired Kyle McAllister had two assists. McAllister had been sitting on the AQ Thunder roster and was swapped out with high end G Aaron Molner, allowing the Silverkings to stay below the limit of eight high end players at any one time.
Making his first start for the Seahawks, G Guy Miszczak was very strong in net, stopping 33 of the 40 shots directed his way.
The SHL schedule was finalized on Sunday, November 8th. The Seahawks next home game will be:
On Saturday, November 14th, the Seahawks visit the AQ Molson Thunder. The Thunder play out of various arenas, and this game will be at the River Valley Civic Center in Grand Bay, starting at 7:30.
